The Steampunk NZ Festival started in 2009, when the League of Victorian Imagineers Steampunk exhibition 'Tomorrow As It Used To Be' exhibition was held at Oamaru's Forrester Gallery. Inspired by the creativity being celebrated, a ball and fashion show were added the next year. From humble beginnings, the now annual Steampunk NZ Festival has evolved into three days of events, workshops and activities, suitable for locals, tourists and Steampunk enthusiasts.

In 2016 The Guardian named Oamaru the 'Steampunk Capital of the World'.
